Imagine a water heater heat pump that heats its water–not by gas, nor by electric resistance–but simply by the air surrounding it using the efficiency of a heat pump. Your power or gas bills will be significantly lower, and you would be doing the environment a service by conserving a considerable amount of energy, without sacrificing comfort. Once connected to your existing water heater, or a new one, the AirTap™ unit acts as a conventional water heater heat pump, using a compressor (powered by 110v current) to extract heat from the surrounding air, and then sending this heat through long copper tubes into your water tank. This heats the water to the same temperature as would a gas burner or electric heating component, but more safely and efficiently.

If it takes four units of energy to heat water, a water heater heat pump utilizes one unit from an electric outlet, and three units from the surrounding air, reducing your energy consumption by about 2.5 times that of your current electric water heater. To put it into perspective, these use less power than an 8-cup coffee machine to run the compressor, and its energy consumption level is equivalent to keeping two coffee machines on for a day.
Installing one of these systems will save you about $300/year over your current electric water heater operation costs. When you need to replace your gas or electric water heater, this is by far the most cost effective and efficient way to go, even compared to tankless water heaters.
